ZBrush Training 2017

Need to learn ZBrush? We are now offering a range of courses for absolute beginners, clay-to-digital converts, 2D to 3D converts and some master classes.

We offer regular high-quality training courses for ZBrush, for a range of skills from an introductory level, to industry specific needs in a professional environment all from our Studio in Frodsham (UK).

The longer courses begin with a grass roots look at the interface and the main differences between ZBrush and any other 3D package. We look at how to set up the workspace to suit the job at hand and how to speed up your sculpting workflow by keeping things simple. During the course we have built in plenty of time for practicing new skills and time for one-to-one feedback with the course tutors. We cover all the essentials including Dynamesh, ZSpheres, Shadowbox, ZRemesher, Polypainting, Fibermesh, UV-Unwrapping, ClipBrushes, hard surface techniques and whole lot more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which course is for me?

We always take time to assess a candidate for training to make sure they are at the correct level. The 5 day course is for an absolute beginner. We ensure that the applicant has basic computer skills and can use a Wacom pen proficiently. After a conversation and assessment we can advise which course would be right for you.

ZBrush Sculpting 1 Week introduction

This course is usually a 5 day course run in my Studio in Cheshire. The course is for people who have an awareness of ZBrush and are already using it in some way. They are often artists who have been trying to learn it in isolation and keep getting stuck or 2D digital artists wanting to add ZBrush to their skill set. This is an intense 5 day course and covers most of the major tools and functions available in the current version of ZBrush. The only requirement is that students are PC literate (ie. they can use a mouse and a Wacom Pen and tablet, they have an understanding of folders and files and can navigate around in Windows 7 or 9 or Mac OSX). The course is designed to build up session after session and students can’t progress to a new session until they are confident with the previous session. It does not cover all of the tools and features in ZBrush but it does get a new user to the point that they can create their own models (usually characters and creatures) by the end of the week.

Clay 2 Digital

This new course is aimed at traditional sculptors wanted to earn new digital skills. We have tested this course and received great feedback from artists/sculptors from Ardmore Studios in Ireland (Penny Dreadful), Mackinnon and Saunders (Corpse Bride, Fantastic Mr Fox, Frankenweenie) in Manchester and various smaller companies and individuals. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive to date.

Bespoke Training

We  have delivered a wide range of bespoke training sessions for a wide range of companies in many sectors including VFX Film and Broadcast TV, game, toys, product design, jewellery design, medical, advertising, theme park design, VFX Production houses. These courses or training sessions vary greatly based on the individuals training needs. Please feel free to call us for a chat about any specific training requirements.

 Examples include:

  • Switching a toy company from a Rhino (NURBS) pipeline to a ZBrush (Subdivision) pipeline.
  • Assisting a jewellery company to add ZBrush into it’s pipeline. Nurbs>ZBrush >Powermill>output.
  • Helping build a digital sculpting pipeline for large TV Productions.

Who are the courses not right for?

As described above these courses are designed to get someone up and running with ZBrush and have an awareness of all the tools and major techniques needed to get employment as a digital sculptor.  Although we cover anatomy sculpting the current courses do not specialise in that area. If you specifically need to improve your anatomy skills than we can recommend courses in Dublin and the UK that might suit your needs. The course covers lighting and rendering in ZBrush but not to a high level. Again, these courses are for people wanting to become a good all round digital sculptor not a specialist Lighting Technical Director or Look Dev artist.

Why Dublin and Cheshire?

I have trained ZBrush all over the UK and in recent years in Dublin. Nearly all courses were run in the clients studio or venue for an education establishment. Since 2011 I have had a small studio located in Frodsham in Cheshire that I have used for my client work (TV, Film and game). We’ve now given that space over 100% to training and kitted it out with the right hardware for the new courses. We have a 3.3 meter screen with a HD projector, several Wacom 24HD Cintiq’s, the newer Cintiq Companions and more recently a Makerbot 3D Printer. All the hardware you’d want to see once you hit the ground running in a post production facility or studio. A lot of my film and TV work has come from post houses and studios in Dublin (ScreenScene, Egg Post Production, Ardmore Studios,  Blackthorn Studios) and as the industry grows over there the need for training has grown. Hence the relationship with ImageIreland.
